La picota original data del siglo XVI y fue erigida en la playa, aproximadamente frente a la Torre de San Pablo .
A principios del siglo XIX se le añadieron las armas del Reino Unido de Portugal, Brasil y Algarve. Al final de la lucha liberal fue demolido forzosamente , pero bajo el Estado Novo fue reconstruido frente al Ayuntamiento utilizando algunos fragmentos identificados del monumento original.
Las picotas eran monolitos de piedra donde se desenmascaraba y a veces ejecutaba a los criminales.
