The original pillory dates from the 16th century and was erected on the beach, approximately opposite the Tower of St. Paul .
At the beginning of the 19th century, the arms of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves were added. At the end of the Liberal struggle it was compulsorily demolished , but under the Estado Novo it was rebuilt in front of the City Hall using some identified fragments of the original monument.
The pillories were stone monoliths where criminals were unmasked and sometimes executed.
