Den oprindelige skamstøtte datter fra det 16. århundrede og blev opstillet på stranden, cirka overfor Sankt Paulus' Tårn.
I begyndelsen af det 19. århundrede blev våbenerne fra Det Forenede Kongerige Portugal, Brasilien og Algarve tilføjet. Ved slutningen af den liberale kamp blev det tvunget nedrevet, men under Estado Novo blev det genopbygget til rådhuset ved hjælp af nogle identificerede fragmenter af det oprindelige monument.
Skamstøtterne var stenmonolitter, hvor kriminelle blev afsløret og nogle gange henrettet.
