Der Leuchtturm wurde 1886 erbaut, um den Fischern den sicheren Weg zur Miño-Mündung zu weisen.
Das Licht erhebt sich über einer Bastionfestung aus dem 17. Jahrhundert , die auch ein Franziskanerkloster beherbergte, eine äußerst seltene Kombination in Portugal (das einzige andere Beispiel ist die Festung Berlengues).
Die ursprüngliche Lampe (1886) war eine weiße Öllampe, die auf einem Eisenrahmen befestigt war . 1947 wurde der heutige Metallturm errichtet und 1995 auf Solarenergie umgestellt.
Es verfügt über eine natürliche Süßwasserquelle , eine von nur dreien auf der Welt, die sich in einer maritimen Festung befinden. Der Brunnen wurde lange Zeit von Mönchen und später von Leuchtturmwärtern bewohnt.
