El faro fue construido en 1886 para guiar a los pescadores hacia el estuario del Miño con seguridad.
La luz se alza sobre una fortaleza abaluartada del siglo XVII que también albergaba un monasterio franciscano , una combinación extremadamente rara en Portugal (el único otro ejemplo es la Fortaleza de las Berlengas).
La lámpara original (1886) era una lámpara de aceite blanca fija sobre un marco de hierro; en 1947 se instaló la actual torre metálica y en 1995 se convirtió a energía solar.
Cuenta con un manantial natural de agua dulce , uno de los tres únicos del mundo que se encuentran en un fuerte marítimo. El pozo permitió que monjes y, posteriormente, fareros lo habitaran durante mucho tiempo.
