Il faro fu costruito nel 1886 per guidare in sicurezza i pescatori nell'estuario del Minho.
La luce si erge sulla cima di una fortezza bastionata del XVII secolo che ospitava anche un monastero francescano : una combinazione estremamente rara in Portogallo (l'unico altro esempio è la fortezza delle Berlengas).
La lampada originale (1886) era una lampada a olio bianca fissa su una struttura in ferro; nel 1947 fu installata l'attuale torre metallica e nel 1995 fu convertita all'energia solare.
Ha una sorgente naturale di acqua dolce , una delle sole tre al mondo presenti su un forte marino. Il pozzo ha permesso l'insediamento a lungo termine di monaci e, in seguito, dei guardiani del faro.
