El far va ser construït el 1886 per guiar els pescadors cap a l'estuari del Miño amb seguretat.
La llum s'alça sobre una fortalesa abaluartada del segle XVII que també albergava un monestir franciscà , una combinació extremadament rara a Portugal (l'únic altre exemple és la Fortalesa de les Berlengues).
El llum original (1886) era un llum d'oli blanc fixa sobre un marc de ferro; el 1947 es va instal·lar l'actual torre metàl·lica i el 1995 es va convertir a energia solar.
Compta amb una font natural d'aigua dolça , un dels tres únics del món que es troben en un fort marítim. El pou va permetre que monjos i, posteriorment, faroners l'habitessin durant molt de temps.
