De vuurtoren werd in1886 gebouwd om vissers veilig de Minho-monding binnen te loodsen.
Het licht staat bovenop een 17ᵉ-eeuws bastionfort dat óók een franciscaans klooster huisvestte – een uiterst zeldzame combinatie in Portugal (het enige andere voorbeeld is de Berlengas-vesting).
Het oorspronkelijke licht (1886) was een vaste, witte olielamp op een ijzeren stellage; in 1947 werd het huidige metalen torentje geplaatst en in 1995 op zonne-energie omgebouwd.
Het bezit een natuurlijke zoetwaterbron – één van slechts drie ter wereld die zich op een zeefort bevinden. De put maakte langdurige bewoning door monniken én later vuurtorenwachters mogelijk.
