Fohnsdorf is a municipality located in the Murtal district of the Austrian state of Styria with 7,558 inhabitants. The municipality belongs to the Judenburg judicial district and lies at the northern edge of the Aichfeld. Fohnsdorf consists of eight cadastral communities and ten census districts. The settlement was first mentioned in documents in 1114 as "Fanestorf" and later became known for brown coal mining; the Wodzicki shaft was the deepest brown coal mine in the world, with tunnels reaching a depth of nearly 1,200 meters.
