Rappottenstein is a market town with 1,745 inhabitants in the Zwettl district in the northwest of Lower Austria, in the so-called Waldviertel. The market town of Rappottenstein forms, together with the municipalities of Arbesbach, Groß Gerungs, Langschlag, and Altmelon, what is known as the Waldviertler Highland, which encompasses the westernmost part of the Zwettl district. Rappottenstein is characterized by forest landscapes and small-scale agriculture. Near the main town of Rappottenstein, which is surrounded by the Hauserberg and Galgenberg, the Kamp River begins at the place where the Große Kamp and Kleine Kamp converge.
