The Ehrwald basin is a large depression in the Tyrolean Außerfern. The majority is occupied by a partially drained moorland area, the Lermooser Moos. Parts of it form the nature reserve Ehrwald Basin, which hosts a great variety of endangered animal and plant species.
The Ehrwald Basin is approximately 3.5 km² in size and is located at an elevation of 963 m above sea level. It is surrounded by the Wetterstein mountains with the distinctive Zugspitze massif to the northeast, the Mieminger chain with the Sonnenspitze to the southeast, the Lechtal Alps with the Grubigstein to the southwest, and the Ammergau Alps with the Daniel to the northwest. The ground is flat, with only a few wooded hills rising above. The Tummebichl, the highest of these, rises to 996 m above sea level, approximately 30 meters above the valley floor.
