The Europe and nature conservation area as well as the biogenetic reserve Gerzkopf is a protected area at Gerzkopf, a foothill of the Dachstein massif, in the state of Salzburg.
The protected area covers approximately 91 hectares around the summit of Gerzkopf, in the Fritztaler mountains of the Salzburg slate Alps. This is a foothill of the Dachstein near the Bischofsmütze, but it is geographically classified within the slate Alps. These are actually part of the greywacke zone, but geologically Gerzkopf is part of the Werfen layers, thus also belonging to the system of the limestone Alps. Both systems, the slate zone and the Werfen zone, create the characteristic rounded peaks of the inner alpine Salzburg grass and forest mountains between Dachstein and the Tyrolean Inn valley. Additionally, the summit area at 1700 m is already in the range of the northern alpine tree line, so the forest already shows signs of the loose high alpine stand and stunted growth.
