Rif Castle is located in the cadastral community of Taxach in the city of Hallein in the Hallein district of the federal state of Salzburg. It is under monument protection. In 1125, the name of a Fridericus de Rifaren appears in a document of Count Berengar of Sulzbach, which could be located in Rif. In a document issued by Emperor Frederick II, the name Riue is included, which is derived from the Latin ripa; the corresponding estate was owned by the Salzburg Cathedral Chapter.
