Schauspielhaus Graz

The Schauspielhaus Graz is an Austrian spoken theater. It is part of the Graz city crown and is located in the first municipal district of Inner City. "A well-ordered play is a true school of morals, politeness, and language," it says in an appeal from Count Orsini and the police president to the Styrian estates in 1770. After longer financially-related complications, the construction work for a new Graz theater building began on October 24, 1774. After a construction period of just under two years, the new theater was opened on September 9, 1776. It was a provincial theater, planned and built by the then Graz "land landscape master mason" and later court master builder Joseph Hueber. During this time, Emanuel Schikaneder was also part of the ensemble for one season. From 1791 to 1797, Joseph Bellomo served as the director of the Graz Provincial National Theater, followed by Johann August Stöger from 1823 to 1833, after the management appointed in 1819 had already resigned after just a few months for financial reasons.
