The Tuxer Fernerhaus is a stopover for the glacier lifts on the Hintertux Glacier. The Tuxer Fernerhaus is situated at 2660 m above sea level and is the central point of the glacier skiing area in Hintertux. The house was opened in 1969 as a restaurant with 200 seats. The construction was remarkable because at that time there was no road to the construction site at the edge of the glacier. All building materials had to be transported using the single chair lift built in 1968. In the same year, the glacier lifts achieved a technical sensation when, for the first time, ski lifts were built on glacial ice in Tyrol. These are the Olpererlift, which runs from the Tuxer Fernerhaus to the glacier floor at 3050 m, and the Gefrorene-Wand lift, which took visitors from the glacier floor to 3250 m, the highest point of the glacier skiing area to this day. In 2013, the Tuxer Fernerhaus was expanded to 950 indoor seats and 950 outdoor seats after some earlier modernization efforts.
