Bludesch is a municipality with 2,541 inhabitants in the Bludenz district. It is located in the Walgau and, along with Thüringen and Ludesch, belongs to the Blumenegg municipalities. The parcel Gais, which houses the Walgau Barracks, is also of great importance. Bludesch is situated in the westernmost federal state of Austria – Vorarlberg – in the Bludenz district. Bludesch lies in the mountainous southern Vorarlberg at an elevation of 529/540 meters above sea level in the middle Walgau. The surrounding mountains reach heights of 2000 to 2600 meters. The Walgau, which is up to five kilometers wide, is traversed by the Ill; its most important tributary is the Lutz. The Lutz, with its root syllable lut/lud, lends its name to the villages of Ludesch, Bludesch, and the surname Zerlauth, as well as a variety of lut-related place names in the Walsertal. Over thousands of years, the rivers Lutz and Ill have ensured that the Walgau has a stone and gravel layer up to 180 m deep, which acts as a large groundwater reservoir for drinking water supply. However, these sediment deposits have also often caused the agricultural land to become murky, leading the Walgau residents to be perceived as "rich in stone but poor in humus." To this day, collected stones at the respective property boundaries adorn the landscape, which is partially protected as Hägi. 44.0% of the municipal area is covered with floodplain and high forest, while the agricultural areas account for around 40%. More than a thousand years ago, in the Middle Ages, the vineyard area in the slopes and valleys made up about 10% of the comparable total area. The annual precipitation amount averages 1400 mm.
