Old discoveries prove that in Alpbach, long before Christ, precious ore was mined. At the beginning of the 1500's silver and copper were discovered in the Gratlspitz, Schatzberg and Luegergraben. Between 1465 and 1760 gold was added to the find. The Augsburg banking family, Fugger, took over the mining business in Alpbach. The Böglerhof was their place of business and the family seat. As the seams began to peter out towards the end of the 1900's the mines were closed. The pit openings on the Gratlspitz are still an attraction. On the old stockpiles the sunlight still catches a hint of dazzling glimmer.
Our Tip: The round Gratlspitz hike takes you past the closed mines where you can try your own hand at discovery, before enjoying a break at the Holzalm with its spectacular views and local fare.
