After a long drive and endless hairpin curves, you reach the highest houses where the hike begins. There are many elevation markers and the course is, to put it mildly, rough. Make sure to wear decent mountain shoes with stiff soles. In many places, there isn't even a path visible anymore, and you have to find the best way over the rocks to the next marker. These markers consist of the Austrian flag, which has been mixed in at regular intervals on the rocks. Additionally, a GPS is essential on this route, as you can quickly become disoriented. It is infinitely beautiful and for me, it was also the loneliest walk I have ever taken (blissfully quiet enjoyment). You really encounter no one here. Make sure not to fall, as you would have to wait a long time for help. Ensure that you are well-trained. It is not a walk for people with poor fitness, weak knees, acrophobia, or balance issues. I needed 7 hours and it went quite fast. Beware of the blue monk's hood, which you often encounter here. It is best not to touch this plant, as the smallest amount is deadly. Also, watch out for the many stray cows, especially when they have calves. The cows are used to being attacked by wolves, making them behave more aggressively than cows in Belgium. There are also several sheep herds. If they see you, they will charge towards you at full speed because they think you are the shepherd. Then make sure not to walk away, but take some firm steps in their direction, and the first sheep will hold back while the rest will follow. You can then follow the herd for a long time before they go in search of another shepherd.
