Petronell hiking trail

Starting point:
Parking lot at the end of Lange Gasse (designated "Parking for Auwald Visitors").
To return to the starting point, you must take the same path. There is the option to follow the boardwalk all the way to Bad Deutsch Altenburg.

From the parking lot, the route crosses pastures and meadows with huge oaks and poplars. After the barrier, you follow the forest road to the right, and soon the first views of the Petroneller Arm are possible. The path runs alongside the old water and allows for an acoustic experience. Gray herons, kingfishers, and moorhens, which inhabit the reed beds here, can be heard. From the traverse, these water birds can be observed just as easily as mallards or great egrets. East of the traverse, beavers leave traces of their industrious activity. Afterward, the path leads north, passing a deep pool, an Eldorado for amphibians and dragonflies. In the last section of the path before reaching the Danube, black walnut trees dominate, their yellow fruits with a typical lemon scent stand out especially in autumn. At the junction with the boardwalk, there are flood markers on an impressive silver poplar. Finally, you follow the boardwalk east with a view of the Swallow Island.
