Alpe Vermunt, often called the alpine jewel of Galtür, was fiercely contested in the past and repeatedly the scene of violent clashes between Protestants and Catholics. Today, it is a beautiful high alpine pasture above the Silvretta reservoirs, along the Silvretta High Alpine Road. Around 900 head of young cattle are herded up to the “Alpe” every summer to graze, as well as many dairy cows, around 80 suckler cows and their calves and 70 horses. Forty pigs are the source of prime alpine bacon. Even farmers from the far-away Zillertal Valley rely on the Silvretta to provide summer quarters for their animals, despite the long journey there. The grazing pastures sprawl over 10,000 hectares and invite hikers and walkers to savour scenic tours, such as the walk around the Silvretta reservoir.
Alpe Vermunt is right next to the Silvretta High Alpine Road, making it easily accessible for cars and motorbikes. It is the starting point for a leisurely round walk of approx. 1.5 hours around the Silvretta reservoir.
