Nevele was already a town at the time of the Battle of the Golden Spurs, which indicates early trading activities. The Lord of Nevele lived in the center of Nevele in a walled castle near the church.
Due to war violence in 1381, the castle, the church and most of the houses of Nevele were destroyed. After this destruction, the castle was only partially rebuilt in the form of a square tower, part of which is still visible today (Cyriel Buyssestraat 6).
