Nevele var allerede i tiden for Guldensporenslaget en by, hvilket indikerer tidlige handelsaktiviteter. Herren af Nevele boede i centrum af Nevele i en omfanget borg nær kirken.
På grund af krigsvold i 1381 blev borgen, kirken og de fleste huse i Nevele ødelagt. Efter denne ødelæggelse blev borgen kun delvist genopbygget i form af et kvadratisk tårn, hvoraf der nu stadig er en del synlig (Cyriel Buyssestraat 6).
