Across the water, just before the Zuivelbrug, is a large, square chimney dating from 1851. It originally belonged to the Goethals steam mill, where grain was ground into flour. Until the advent of the steam engine, people had relied largely on water and wind to mill their grain. From the second quarter of the 19th century, mechanical power was gradually introduced in the form of steam engines. On the front façade of the building in Meerseniersstraat is an attractive frieze depicting a horse mill and work in the mill and bakery. The last miller, Jacques Goethals, was still milling here until November 2008. Today the mill is a coffee house that also sells cakes.
