In comparison with the parliament, the Wiertz Museum looks diminutive. The Belgian painter Antoine Wiertz (1806-1865), a man of little modesty, persuaded the Belgian state in 1851 to give him a house, studio and large garden in exchange for his estate when he died. Today, a number of his profoundly romantic works still hang here, some of which even outdo his ego for size. The writer Hendrik Conscience, who was the museum’s very first curator, wrote many works here.
The European Parliament recently purchased the intimate garden and opened it to the public. Small concerts are regularly given here . Meetings take place in the living quarters.
