Beschrijving

The Moerenpoort or Moerentoren is the only remaining medieval city gate in the Belgian city of Tongeren. Moeren refers to the marshes that were previously present.
After the Roman period when Tongeren was allowed to call itself a municipium, the neglected site made a successful revival in the late Middle Ages. In 1230, the people of Tongeren referred to themselves as cives and burgenses. Tongeren, located within the Prince-Bishopric of Liège, obtained city rights from the Liège prince-bishop as one of the 23 Good Cities, along with the right to build fortifications and establish a city militia. This was part of the prince-bishop's policy to militarily and economically stimulate areas in his domain. The military threat from surrounding principalities such as the county of Loon, the duchy of Brabant, and the nearby Maas and Rhine regions also necessitated the construction of city walls. Between 1241 and 1290, city walls were built, and a city militia was established. Access to the city was ensured via six gates on the main access roads. Additionally, 13 fortress towers were built that served as bastions.
The moerenpoort, which connected to the road to Wezet, was built between 1257 and 1264 on the remnants of the Roman fortifications from the second century AD.
In 1344, Engelbert III of the Mark became the prince-bishop of Liège. His accession caused great tensions throughout the entire prince-bishopric. In 1347, the Moerenpoort was destroyed during an attack by soldiers of the previous prince-bishop of Liège, Adolf II of the Mark. In 1379, the reconstruction of the Moerenpoort was initiated. The forebuilding, to which the wooden gate was attached to close off the passage, was destroyed by French troops in 1673. Thanks to an agreement between the residents of the Sint-Catharina Beguinage and the troops, the Moerenpoort was spared from French destruction.
