Like some other Trappist monasteries in Belgium and the Netherlands, the monks of the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Saint-Rémy in Rochefort brew beer: Rochefort. In 1899, they established a small brewery, assisted by the expertise of the mother abbey. Paulin Cattoir, a monk from Rochefort, gained a reputation after World War I. In 1952, a significant investment was made that increased both the quality and quantity of the beer produced. The brewery became the main source of income for the abbey. In the 1970s, a complete renovation was again carried out. Rochefort is one of the seven abbeys that is allowed to use the 'Trappist beer' label. The Abbey of Notre-Dame de Saint-Rémy in Rochefort belongs to the Cistercians of the Strict Observance, the Trappists.
