In the cemetery next to the church of Saint André rests Jean-Nicolas Jénicot, who had a remarkable contact with Napoleon Bonaparte. He was the village pastor when the Emperor passed through here. While he was giving his horse a drink and leaning against a young pear tree, the pastor recognized the Emperor. He stepped closer and offered Napoleon a glass of his favorite wine, the Chambertin. The two began a conversation, and Napoleon was impressed by the pastor's intelligence. He then asked to write his name in a notebook, after which he added himself: the next bishop of Tournai. However, the defeat at Waterloo decided otherwise. By the way, did you know that Chambertin is the name of a grand cru vineyard in Gevrey-Chambertin in the Côte de Nuits (Burgundy)? Chambertin is located at an elevation between 275 and 300 meters, protected by the Montagne de la Combe-Grisard. Chambertin is among the best vineyards of the Côte d'Or. The wines from this vineyard are "masculine," with tannins more pronounced than in the top wines from Vosne-Romanée. Chambertins in their youth are full, powerful, and strict, structured and meaty, with flavor notes of black forest fruit, licorice, and coffee beans.
