St. Barbara's Church is an example of a mining cathedral. All the mining cathedrals, including those in Winterslag, Waterschei, Zwartberg and Beringen, date from the interwar period. They are built in brick, look impressive and somewhat out of proportion. Sint-Barbara in Eisden was designed in 1934 by Auguste vanden Nieuwenborg in an expressionist style with neo-Gothic elements.
The mining of coal has given rise to this beautiful architecture in Limburg, more than in the Borinage. Everywhere in the Kempen mining region there are of course first and foremost unique industrial installations, but also well-preserved residential areas and imposing engineering and executive residences. From the square spireless tower, 53 meters high, 300 steps, you have a spacious view of the beautiful urbanization of the area, and of the garden city or cité.
