The canal to Beverlo was built in a record time of 3 years. The excavation was started in 1854. It acts as a branch of the Bocholt-Herentals Canal and was dug mainly for military reasons. It was a supply channel for the garrison town of Leopoldsburg. Later it also became commercially important for the metal industry in Lommel.
The canal ends in the harbour basin of Leopoldsburg and is free of locks.
