The town hall of Herzele is also known as the Schepenhuis
The exact date of construction of the current Schepenhuis is unknown, but the first official mention dates from 1571 , in which it is referred to as the “ Herberghe Sinte Martin staende ande halle ende marckt van herseele”. This suggests that the building may be even older.
During the 18th century , when the function of "schepen" disappeared, the building underwent some thorough adjustments, including the addition of a new tower. In 1778 it was sold to the Count of Lichtervelde, the then Lord of Herzele. Since then, the building has served alternately as an inn and town hall.
In recent years (2025) plans have been made to renovate the Schepenhuis and give it a new purpose . The municipal council of Herzele has sold the building to a private partner with the intention of housing a catering business and shop. The aim is to transform the Schepenhuis into the "beating heart" of the municipality.
Alderman's house from 1951-1952, inspired by 18th century architecture.
