The church of St. Carolus Borromeus dates back to 1865. It is one of the most beautiful examples of neo-Gothic eclecticism in the region. The construction of the church marked the beginning of the establishment of a new parish in the territory of Ruiselede, complete with a rectory, schools, and shops. The great driving force behind the project was Pastor Carolus Doom. That is why people called the place Doomkerke.
