Statue from 1987 by Henri Lenaerts (geb. 1923) for Karel Buls (1837-1917), Brussels burgomaster (lord mayor) from 1881 till 1899. Buls was too modest to wish for a stand-up statue, so here he sits in front of 'his' works: the well-kept and renovated monuments in the city. This son of a goldsmith improved the school system and let lower classes learn. His transmutation classes wer boycotted though and led to more French speaking. He loved people and animals and put benches in parks and in the streets. His dog jumps up to him, eager to go out?
