The peaceful artists' village of Vlassenbroek is located along the Scheldt meander. However, the proximity of the fortified city of Dendermonde and the merciless Scheldt meant that the village had to endure a lot.
The pearl of Vlassenbroek is undoubtedly the Gothic cruciform church dedicated to Saint Gertrude of Nivelles 'Patroness against crusts, as well as against the harw, especially among small children and for the drying of rats and muses'. The core of the church dates back to an 11th-12th century
Chapel of which the Romanesque choir in rubble stone is still a remnant. The transepts date from the 14th-15th century. The church was badly damaged during the Iconoclasm. Wars, looting and floods meant that the church was not fully restored until 1640.
