Although Aywaille is not large, it is home to more than eight thousand people, and it therefore fulfils a central function for the region. It is also an important road junction: Aywaille is sometimes called the gateway to the Liège Ardennes. Nearby, Austrians and French fought one of their battles in 1794 on the heights Sur La Reid or Heid des Gattes, which is now a nature reserve.
