This is referred to as the European quarter in Brussels. The whole of Europe meets on the many terraces in the square to have a drink after work. The monumental facade in the middle of the square is all that remains of the old Luxembourg railway station. Behind it are the offices and meeting rooms for the MEPs. The neighbourhood is home to tens of thousands of square metres of office space where Eurocrats, lawyers, lobbyists and many other employees come to shape the European project during the day. After working hours, these efforts continue in the square, on a more informal level. This was the first city expansion after 1835 that attracted aristocrats and wealthy industrialists, and this is clearly reflected in the buildings.
