The town hall is located in the heart of the city, on the cozy square of the Grote Markt.
The neo-Classical town hall was built between 1870 and 1873 according to the plans of architect Trappeniers. The majestic building was completely refreshed in the seventies to celebrate its 100th anniversary. At the end of 2003, new renovation works started, which were completed in 2005.
Inside the town hall, there is a large collection of paintings, including those by the renowned Jean-François Portaels and his school.
There are also numerous busts of former mayors and the bust of King Albert made by Rik Poot, a bronze caster from a family in Vilvoorde, now world-famous for his sculptures in lost-wax technique.
