In 1985, the classic slope on the Paterberg was renovated with cobblestones. Although the cobblestones are beautifully laid flat, they become very slippery in wet weather, making it a tough challenge for many cycling enthusiasts with its 20% steep incline. You go from a height of 32 meters in the valley to 80 meters above sea level at the top of the hill.
The slope starts gradually but worsens with an average gradient of 12.5%. Halfway up, you reach the maximum incline of 20%. The pros ride in gear 42-19 or 42-21 here. Climbing is slightly easier on the left side, but in the race, the riders have no choice and must navigate over the cobblestones since this stretch is enclosed with barriers.
Meanwhile, this part of the cobblestone road surface is considered part of the protected heritage in Flanders.
