Description

The NEOGOTHIC St. Mauritius Church has a colorful painted interior. The five-sided choir dates back to the Gothic period.

The gravestone of the van Bocholtz family was discovered beneath the high altar and was given a new place at the back of the church. Edmond van Bocholtz, land commander of the German order in Alden Biesen, had his family members buried under this stone in 1659, intending to make this church the family burial place. However, the land commander himself was buried elsewhere. He is depicted in the painting of the kneeling St. Dominic. He receives the Rosary from the hands of Our Lady and simultaneously gives a rosary to the land commander. In the background, St. Gregory of Cappadocia holds the banner of the German Order.

Mauritius, the patron saint of the church, was very popular among the Franks. He was a military leader under the Roman Emperor Maximilian Hercules. Together with his companions, he faced martyrdom. His statue is located in the right aisle. He is dressed as a Roman centurion (officer) in the colors of Bilzen (green and red).

NEOGOTHIC
A building style from the 19th century inspired by medieval Gothic, characterized by vertical lines and pointed arches. Architecture, interior, and furniture often formed a cohesive whole. Many neo-Gothic churches were colorfully painted inside. Today, these colorful interiors are mostly covered by a layer of white plaster in most neo-Gothic churches.
