In 1220, Hocht Abbey (Lanaken) was given the right of patronage (the right to appoint the parish priest) over the church. The building was regularly restored over the centuries by the abbesses of the abbey who sometimes had the year of the repairs affixed as a reminder. Next to the church door you can see the year 1727 and the shield of Abbess Claire-Scholastika de Warnant. However, during the FRENCH REVOLUTION (5), the abbey lost its rights.
At the back of the church is a curious statue of Saint Job: it shows a man seated on a dung heap, sunk in deep misery and covered with sores and pustules. For decades, the statue was revered by people in need or suffering from skin diseases. This 16th century sculpture travelled to Vienna in 1990 for an exhibition. The statue of Christ on the cross (1450-1500) in the weekly chapel is also of great artistic value.
The cemetery still has some 17th century grave crosses.
