In the Middle-Ages, this was the location of the water-filled moat of Brussels at the foot of the 1st wall. This wall and moat fell into disuse when the city expanded and the second wall was added. Place Sainte Catherine was built on a filled-in dock and crowned with a church in the new style of the time, ‘Eclecticism', which mixes existing styles. Critics are wrong to call this a youthful sin of Jozef Poelaert. On sunny days and when the sky is blue, you could imagine yourself in southern Europe as you look up at the elegant towers and their domes.
