In castles and fortresses like here in the castle of Beersel, you often encounter spiral stair towers. Very often, guides will tell you that the spiral staircases turn leftward descending and rightward ascending because it made it easier to defend the fortresses against right-handed knights and soldiers. It is indeed easier to chop downward when the staircase turns left, as the central support column of the spiral stair is on your left side. And for the attacker, it becomes all the more difficult. Sounds logical, right? But there appears to be little evidence for this claim. On the website Fake History Hunter , you can read that this is a myth.
