The city has the best-preserved city wall in Belgium; it was built in the 13th century and is part of the second fortification of the city.
Binche is especially known for its ancient carnival. Especially the Gilles with their traditional costumes are world-renowned. For a long time, it was thought that the carnival was first organized in 1549 by Maria of Hungary in honor of a visit from her brother Charles V and his son Philip II, but this theory is no longer sustainable, as there are references to a carnival in Binche as early as 1395.
In 2003, UNESCO placed the Binche carnival on the List of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
The belfry from the 14th-16th century is also on the list of belfries recognized as World Heritage by UNESCO.
