St. Ursula Church

The Sint-Ursula Church in Lanaken is a beautiful neo-Gothic cross basilica built between 1860 and 1864 to a design by architect Herman Jaminé. Above the entrance, a special bas-relief welcomes visitors, depicting Saint Ursula handing over the building plans to the then pastor. The sturdy tower and the slender ribbed vaults of the interior make the church a striking landmark in the village center. Inside, the impressive murals in the choir by artist Godfried Guffens stand out, as well as a historical stained glass window donated in 1864 by King Leopold I in memory of his visit. Visitors can admire the monumental Stations of the Cross, painted by the Lanaken artist Jan Willem Rosier, and a much older Romanesque baptismal font from the 14th century. In the atmospheric weekday chapel, original paintings of the seven sacraments have been rediscovered during restoration work. The organ, designed by the Brussels builder Pierre Schyven, is harmoniously integrated into the chancel and contributes to the rich tonal quality of the church. Due to its special artistic value and stylistic unity, the church has been officially protected as a monument since 1994.
