The Vloetemveld extends over Snellegem (170 ha) and Zedelgem (110 ha), of which 113 ha is domain forest and the rest is military domain. Vloetem was once a swampy, swampy piece of heathland, owned by the Count of Flanders. In 1296, Guy of Dampierre donated the property to St John's Hospital in Bruges. Many centuries later, the Hospitallers ploughed the area into fertile arable land. A dike had to hold back the water, so that the area behind it could be cultivated. Numerous ponds were created in front of the dike, which was filled in and wooded between 1770 and 1882, mainly with Scots pine. In 1796 the Vloetemveld was transferred to the OCMW of Bruges. After World War I, most of it was expropriated by the Ministry of National Defense for the construction of an ammunition depot. In 1980 the remaining part was purchased by Waters and Forests.
