Dr. Guislain was not only a great physician, he was also well-versed in the world of architecture (by upbringing). Guislain personally oversaw the design of a psychiatric institution that met his requirements. In 1824, he participated in a competition organized by the Société des Beaux Arts de Bruxelles for a design of an institution for the mentally ill. Dr. Guislain wanted to see this design built and kept seeking support in Ghent. He wished for the new psychiatric center to be located in a rural area just outside the Brugse Poort. Eventually, after many years, he got his way. City architect Adolphe Pauli examined Dr. Guislain's designs. In 1857, the institute opened its doors.
