In 1994 the 2nd Regiment Guides, a Leopard tank battalion from Altenrath in Germany, was disbanded along with many other units. The problem then arose of preserving the rich patrimony of this glorious cavalry regiment created in 1874. The municipality of Zelzate applied to give this patrimony a home. The municipality was grateful to the regiment for the great sacrifices that the unit had made in the defense of Zelzate during the eighteen-day campaign in May 1940. The museum pays appropriate tribute to the rich past of the regiment in three museum rooms.
