The castle of Wissekerke is a moated castle and largely dates from the 15th century. The castle was for centuries the main residence of the noble family Vilain XIIII. This ancient family provided the mayors of Basel for 139 years. Over the centuries, the castle has been thoroughly rebuilt and renovated. The castle of Wissekerke was one of the first castles in our country in neo-Gothic style in which the former Empire elements were integrated. The castle is known for its suspension bridge, one of the oldest surviving examples in Europe and said to be the oldest cast-iron structure on the continent.
