In 2012, le Grand-Hornu, one of the most important mining sites in Wallonia, was included on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. 200 years of avant-garde... summarizes le Grand Hornu. The former mining complex is a reflection of 19th-century industry an hour from Brussels and is the result of a real urban project. The remarkable complex was built in neoclassical style and includes the industrial mining complex, the working-class district and the homes of the administrators. Le Grand Hornu is recognized as an exceptional heritage of Wallonia and actively participates in international protection programs. The historical visit is complemented by temporary exhibitions on design, applied arts (in the restored rooms) and contemporary art (in the Museum, which has been open since 2002). In this place, past and future are combined.
