The Canal du Centre is the main attraction in this region of Hainaut. This canal connects Brussels via Nivelles to the Sambre and must bridge a height difference of 89 meters. This was solved by 4 lifts that each eliminate a difference in level of about 16 meters. They were built for boats up to 300 tons. These lifts are still in operation today. You can not only admire them but also take a boat trip and experience their operation live. These old lifts stand out for their simple operation based on the principle of communicating vessels.
