Gentbruggebrug is a realization of Edmond Block, a tanner from Ledeberg. This industrialist who entered politics was immediately noticed by his commitment to a bridge over the Scheldt, which would connect Gentbrugge with the other peripheral municipalities. However, the Catholics did not take this proposal to heart and feared that 'Block with his bridge would bring the krapuul from St-Amandsberg, Oostakker and Destelbergen to Gentbrugge'.
